ArmInfo. Hovhannes Martirosyan, Head of the Environment and Mineral Resources Inspectorate of Armenia, participated in the high-level meeting of the 20th Conference of the Parties (CoP20) to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which was held in Samarkand from November 23 to 25, 2025.
According to the press service of the Inspectorate, the meetings discussed global trends in the control of international trade in endangered species, ways to improve state obligations, and the need to strengthen law enforcement and cooperation between law enforcement agencies.
The particular importance of modernizing CITES tools and implementing digital and data-driven solutions, including new mechanisms for monitoring, traceability, and international data exchange, was emphasized. These mechanisms contribute to improving the governance of international trade in wild plants and animals.
As a reminder, the CITES Convention is an international agreement regulating international trade in endangered plant and animal species, ensuring that it does not pose a threat to their natural existence. The Republic of Armenia acceded to the CITES Convention in 2009 and implements its obligations under it, which are aimed at preserving biodiversity and ensuring an effective system for monitoring international trade.
