ArmInfo.Concerns over high air pollution levels have been growing in Yerevan in recent days. Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan wrote on his Facebook page.
According to him, the pollution is not only an issue in Yerevan, but also in the Ararat, Armavir, and Aragatsotn provinces, as well as the Ararat Valley districts near Yerevan. Air pollution in this region is strictly seasonal and is primarily caused by geographical factors: air circulation, dry anticyclonic weather, and the influx of dry, dusty air masses, primarily from the southeast, as well as the terrain. These natural processes are cyclical and occur annually with varying intensity, creating an inversion layer, virtually stopping air exchange and leading to a constant accumulation of airborne pollutants.
In addition, there is an increased concentration of various gases, organic dust, and smoke in the air due to heating, fires, and combustion during this time of year. This further exacerbates the situation in the absence of air exchange.
"The reduction of air pollution in the region will happen because the inversion layer is destroyed by the influx of cyclonic air masses from the north. We will inform you later about the measures that the Yerevan Municipality is taking to address this issue," the mayor noted.
