ArmInfo. A temporary exhibition of works by Yervand and Meline Kochar, titled "United in Art," will open at the Museum-Studio of Armenian artist Gevorg Grigoryan (Giotto).
The exhibition will reimagine Yervand Kochar's Parisian period and restore the forgotten yet important presence of Meline Ohanian (Kochar) in the artist's life and in Armenian fine art. The couple's creative paths crossed in Paris during the years when Kochar was already an established and recognized artist, and Meline was an aspiring artist, inspired by Kochar's art to pursue new endeavors. For decades, her work was perceived as merely a part of her husband's biography. This is the first large-scale retrospective of Meline Kochar's work in Armenia. After her tragic death, her works were carefully preserved by her mother and eventually ended up in private collections. The fragmentary nature of her legacy was one of the reasons why her name fell out of professional and public attention.
Meline's tender, lyrical, and naive art was formed alongside the bold artistic experiments of Yervand Kochar. Her husband's influence is noticeable in her early work; attempts at imitation can be discerned in several works. Meline compensated for her lack of professional training by studying in the studio of the French avant-garde artist Fernand Leger.
The exhibition will open on November 19 at 6:30 PM at the Giotto Museum and Studio (45A Mashtots Avenue).
