ArmInfo. The lawyers for renowned entrepreneur and national philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan have characterized the Cassation Court's decision to extend his pretrial detention for another two months as "shadow justice." This was stated by one of the lawyers, Aram Vardevanyan, at a press conference on November 15.
According to Vardevanyan, the Court of Appeals rejected the prosecutor's appeal on November 13 and found the suspicions against Karapetyan for a number of economic offenses unfounded. For this reason, the lawyer noted, Karapetyan should have been released on November 18, after the two-month pretrial detention period had expired.
However, according to the defense, the investigator failed to file a motion to extend Karapetyan's pretrial detention that same day, despite several media reports on November 12 alleging that a motion had been filed. "I officially declare that no such motion was filed," the lawyer said.
According to Vardevanyan, on November 13, the Cassation Court issued a decision of which neither the defense nor the public were notified. "But the investigator knew about this. How? Because on November 13, at 6:27 PM, he filed a motion to extend the arrest, citing the Cassation Court's decision, which we still haven't received," he stated.
Vardevanyan proposed adding this speedy decision to the Guinness Book of World Records, as it exceeds cosmic speed. He noted that the Cassation Court had never made such lightning-fast decisions before, presenting statistics from previous years.
