ArmInfo. The Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE) has issued a statement deeming it unacceptable to adopt legislative changes affecting lawyers' activities in Armenia without meaningful consultations with the Chamber of Bar Associations of the Republic. A translation of the CCBE statement was published by the Chamber of Advocates of Armenia.
"In this regard, we urge the competent authorities of the Republic of Armenia to ensure the full involvement of the Chamber of Bar Associations in any legislative initiatives directly affecting the professional activities of lawyers, including those related to tax changes, in order to address their concerns and to make revisions, if necessary," the Council's statement continued.
Furthermore, the CCBE encourages the Armenian government to sign and ratify the Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of the Profession of Lawyers without delay. The CCBE is confident that by doing so, Armenia will thus demonstrate its continued commitment to the rule of law, the protection of the legal profession, and the principles enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights. "Such a step would also strengthen public trust in the justice system and contribute to ensuring that all citizens enjoy genuine and equal access to justice," the Council added.
