ArmInfo. The criminal case against elected Gyumri mayor Vardan Ghukasyan and the preventive measure chosen for him are aimed at political revenge, not justice. They are aimed not only at isolating him from political life but also at depriving him of his fundamental right to life, as noted in a statement issued by Zaruhi Postanjyan, Ghukasyan'a lawyer.
The lawyer notes that on November 6, 2025, Vardan Ghukasyan was unexpectedly taken by ambulance from the Yerevan-Kentron penitentiary institution to the Surb Grigor Lusavorich Medical Center, where he underwent coronary angiography. Following this medical intervention, Ghukasyan remained in the hospital, receiving the necessary medical care. However, the following day, early in the morning of November 7, 2025, Vardan Ghukasyan was taken to the penitentiary institution not by ambulance, but in a police car behind bars, "under inhumane conditions."
Postanjyan, citing medical records she reviewed and a personal meeting with Ghukasyan, unequivocally states that her client requires urgent, specialized treatment. However, he is being systematically denied this treatment.
"The Government of the Republic of Armenia, represented by the leadership of the Penitentiary Service and personally by Nikol Pashinyan, who publicly threatened Mr. Ghukasyan, has been fully aware of his serious health issues since at least November 6, 2025. These issues require immediate treatment in a specialized medical center, yet the authorities continue to take no action.
The initiation of a criminal case against Vardan Ghukasyan and his arrest are not based on legal requirements, but serve Nikol Pashinyan's political goals: to deprive Vardan Ghukasyan of both his political activities and his life.
I would not be mistaken if I said that there is currently a murder plot against Vardan Ghukasyan. The threat to his life and health is not only a matter of human responsibility but also of state responsibility. I urge law enforcement agencies to respond immediately. I demand that they ensure the preservation and protection of Vardan Ghukasyan's life, safety, and dignity," the lawyer concludes.
