ArmInfo. "How We Could Have Prevented the 44-Day War: My Mistake." This is how Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan titled his Facebook video address, in response to remarks made by the third President of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan.
"What was needed to prevent the 44-day war? One thing was needed: for us to align the legitimacy of the Karabakh settlement, as we see it, with international legitimacy," he said. According to the Prime Minister, this was impossible in practice, because Armenia's understanding of the legitimacy of the Karabakh settlement had diverged from international views since the early 1990s, creating a gap between them.
"In theory it was possible to align our views, but in practice, it was extremely challenging, because as a first step, we would have had to recognize that Karabakh should be part of Azerbaijan. There was simply no other option. If we believe we could have done this in 2018-2019, then yes, I made a mistake by not doing so," Pashinyan said.
