ArmInfo. Hovhannes Movsisyan, Director of Public Television of Armenia, is surprised by the citizens' "surprise" over the broadcast of the liturgy at Hovhannavank Monastery, which was celebrated by the defrocked Father Aram (secular name Stepan Asatryan), and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan attended, but only as an ordinary parishioner.
"Why did other media outlets cover this event? Because it is an event of public interest that the media decided to cover, including live, just like PTA," he said in a conversation with journalists in parliament on November 4. When asked why PTA doesn't broadcast the liturgy celebrated by the Catholicos of All Armenians in Holy Etchmiadzin, while other media outlets do, Movsisyan recalled that PTA provided coverage of the consecration ceremony of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin for all other media outlets following its reconstruction.
Regarding PTA's failure to broadcast the liturgy dedicated to the 26th anniversary of the anointing and enthronement of His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians, Hovhannes Movsisyan noted that in order for PTA to cover any liturgy, he is notified in advance by an official letter. "They approach us, it's discussed, the area is studied, and a huge amount of work is done." "It's one thing to broadcast a liturgy with a single camera, and quite another to broadcast a large event," he said, without specifying how many cameras were allocated to broadcast the event at Hovhannavank.
It should be noted that Public Television's live broadcast is financed by taxpayers.
Recall, on October 26 and November 2, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, members of the Cabinet, and the ruling Civil Contract party attended the liturgy celebrated by defrocked monk Stepan Asatryan. Each time, a police presence was observed in the village of Hovhannavank from early morning, and numerous security personnel guarded the monastery grounds. On October 31, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced in a video address on social media his plans to "pray" in Etchmiadzin as well.
