ArmInfo. National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan believes the opposition is obsessed with the return of Artsakh residents. He stated this in response to the refusal of representatives of Armenia's ruling Civil Contract party to support a draft resolution at the Euronest session in Yerevan demanding the protection of the right of return of internally displaced persons to Nagorno- Karabakh.
"I want to understand whether they are ready to ensure the safety of these people. Are you serious?" he said in a conversation with journalists on October 31.
According to Simonyan, the opposition is constantly harping on the return of Artsakh residents.
"Can anyone now claim to guarantee the return of an Armenian to any settlement in Karabakh? These are not just empty words, not toasts." Naturally, after some time, when relations normalize, some people will leave and live in their homes if the opportunity arises. I want to understand who they're turning to? That is, are there residents of Karabakh today who want to leave, and the Armenian authorities are saying, "No, we're against it?" Simonyan said.
Journalists reminded the speaker of the example of Gaza, when the international community united and decided: to which Simonyan responded: "This is a very good example: the international community united, and now genocide is taking place in Gaza."
"We could become a second Gaza: and what would the Sanchezs and others do? Would they stand up and make a statement from the center of Madrid? They would turn our territory into Gaza. They would make their false statements," the speaker of the Armenian parliament concluded. As a reminder, MEP Nacho Sanchez Amor, speaking in the Armenian parliament during a meeting of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly committees, described the situation of police arresting people for expressing opinions or posting on social media as unacceptable. He specifically emphasized that such an approach is inconsistent with democratic principles. "The Armenian authorities must be mindful of this, especially if the country intends to become a candidate for EU accession," Amor emphasized.
