ArmInfo. Armenia's judicial system is currently politicized, and sentences now depend on the will of one person. Thus, Armenia's third president, Serzh Sargsyan, commented to journalists on the detention of Masis mayor and prime ministerial candidate David Hambardzumyan.
In this regard, the third president noted that no serious evidence was presented in Hambardzumyan's case, and that the sentence imposed under the article was unprecedented. "All this is being done to make it impossible to apply an amnesty and influence the sentence," Sargsyan explained.
Regarding why no international organization has yet responded to the situation with illegal detentions in Armenia, he explained that this is because they actually support the current government. "That is, they are guided not by norms, but by their own interests," Sargsyan concluded.
As a reminder, Masis Mayor David Hambardzumyan was arrested at Zvartnots Airport on October 28 upon returning from Russia. Previously, a court sentenced Masis Mayor David Hambardzumyan, nominated by the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) as a candidate for prime minister during the impeachment process, to six years and three months in prison. He is accused of "organizing and participating in mass unrest." The incident occurred in 2018, as part of the well-known events. Hambardzumyan was released on bail of 5 million drams and a written undertaking not to leave the country.
