ArmInfo. When speaking about the domestic political situation in Armenia, Nacho Sanchez Amor, member of the European Parliament, criticized the arrest of people for expressing opinions or posting on social media, deeming it unacceptable..
He made this statement in the Armenian parliament during a meeting of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly committees on politics, human rights, democracy, economic integration, and legislative approximation and alignment with EU policies, during the approval of the document outlining the prospects for the European Neighborhood Policy.
Specifically, he emphasized the inconsistency of such an approach with democratic principles. "The Armenian authorities must be attentive to this, especially if the country considers itself a candidate for EU membership," Amor emphasized.
He expressed his conviction that all of this is a consequence of the persistence in Armenia of "a large Soviet legacy in the legal system that allows for detention without trial." "First, they send the person to prison, and then they see what happens. Currently, the Armenian Ministry of Justice is trying to overcome this historical legacy," the MEP concluded.
