ArmInfo. The head of the Yerkrapah Volunteer Union, Sasun Mikaelyan, does not see a threat to the country's security in the Armenian government's decision to reduce military service from two years to a year and a half.
Speaking to journalists at the Yerablur military pantheon, where Mikaelyan arrived to pay tribute to the five victims of the terrorist attack on the Armenian parliament on October 27, 1999, he emphasized that having a professional army is more suitable today. He stressed that the quality of servicemen, rather than the quantity is important, and urged against prematurely judging the government's decision. "The Yerkrapah Volunteer Union, for its part, will always be at the border, supporting our army and the Armenian military. I can't say for sure what's right and what's wrong. Today, there are people who support this decision and others oppose it. Meanwhile, our main challenge is to maintain the unity of the people, to remain strong, and to stand alongside the army," the Union's head stated.
Regarding rumors that the authorities are also abolishing the volunteer union, Mikaelyan recalled that Yerkrapah has been guarding the state border since 2020. It is also a public organization that prepares Armenian young men for conscription. "Everyone who was drafted into the army after Yerkrapah was already a ready-made soldier. We are doing this, and we will continue our work in this direction," the head of the Volunteer Union concluded.
