ArmInfo. The National Assembly of Armenia has started the first reading of the amendments to the law on Audiovisual Media, submitted by MPs Taguhi Ghazaryan and Sisak Gabrielyan.
Taguhi Ghazaryan presented the amendments and pointed out that the document envisages reducing the number of television channels broadcasting in the public multiplex from three to two. Currently, Channel One holds this status, as the main broadcaster, along with the spiritual and cultural channel "Shoghakat," and the news channel "Lurer." While the bill does not explicitly mention the possibility of closing the Shoghakat television channel of the Armenian Apostolic Church, most observers believe that this is the topic of discussed. Taguhi Ghazaryan emphasized that the freed-up state funds, totaling 3 billion drams, will be competitively distributed among other broadcasters for the development of cultural, educational, and spiritual programming. "An assessment of the current situation shows that maintaining the required number of public broadcasters meeting the requirements set by existing legal regulations poses quality challenges," Ghazaryan stated.
