ArmInfo. The Chamber of Architects of Armenia has expressed their concerns regarding the ongoing renovation at the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial Complex, dedicated to the victims of the Armenian Genocide of 1915 in Ottoman Turkey.
A statement, signed by 172 architects, highlights that the work is being carried out with faulty architectural and engineering design solutions, jeopardizing the monument's structural stability and detracting from its original appearance and expressiveness. In their address to the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute Foundation and the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports of the Republic of Armenia, the Chamber of Architects is calling for an immediate halt to the current restoration work at the Armenian Genocide Memorial. They are urging the creation of a new professional group that would include experienced specialists in engineering, architecture, earthquake engineering, and restoration.
The architects are demanding a comprehensive scientific study of the memorial, including photometric, ultrasound, materials science, geological, geophysical, and other studies, as well as an assessment of the existing waterproofing and drainage projects, which they deem inadequate. The goal is to develop new solutions by the new professional group.
The statement calls for the commissioning of a new restoration project for the Armenian Genocide Memorial, including solutions for the restoration of the three already damaged steles, as well as a separate project for the preservation of the nine surviving historic steles. "Before conducting research and developing a new project, temporary conservation measures should be carried out to protect the monument from rain and snow," the Chamber noted.
