ArmInfo. Russia is interested in close cooperation with Azerbaijan in various regional formats, as stated by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova during a briefing on October 15.
According to her, this includes the CIS, the SCO, the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia, within the Caspian Five, and the 3+3 regional cooperation platform, including in the context of building a Eurasian security architecture.
Zakharova also pointed out the growing dialogue between Baku and the Eurasian Economic Union, as evidenced by the well-established tradition of the Azerbaijani Prime Minister attending meetings of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council as a guest of honor. She recalled that the most recent event of this kind took place in Minsk on September 30 of this year.
"We positively assess our interactions with Baku within the CIS format. Our partners are very active in various areas of sectoral cooperation. For instance, this year, Azerbaijan is hosting all three CIS theme capitals. Gabala, for example, is serving as the youth capital, Lachin as the cultural capital, and Ganja as the sports capital. During this period, from September 28 to October 8, the Third CIS Games were successfully held in seven Azerbaijani cities, with over 1,500 athletes participating in 23 sports," the diplomat noted.
Zakharova also noted that Moscow welcomes Baku's accession to several final documents of the Dushanbe summit on October 10. According to her, this includes statements by heads of state on cooperation in combatting transnational crime and in connection with the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster. "Azerbaijan also supported the adoption of a cooperation program in countering terrorism and extremism for the period from 2026 to 2028 - an important medium-term document on specific areas of joint work by CIS countries to ensure regional security," Zakharova concluded.
