ArmInfo. Armenian security forces have detained six clergymen of the Aragatsotn Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, including the primate of the diocese, Mkrtich Proshyan. This was announced by lawyer Ara Zohrabyan on his Facebook page.
According to him, five clergymen of the Aragatsotn Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC), the primate of the diocese, and several civilians are currently detained. Among the detained clergymen are Father Paren, Father Manuk, Father Hayk, Father Ghevond, and Father Mkrtich.
Zohrabyan also noted that security forces are concealing the whereabouts of Mkrtich Proshyan. He added that the Investigative Committee is not providing any information about his whereabouts. "Such behavior by a state body is consistent with Article 451 of the RA Criminal Code, which pertains to enforced disappearances. According to this provision, denial or concealment of the fact of deprivation of liberty by an official or group of persons acting with the permission, support, consent, or connivance of the state, or concealment of information about their status or whereabouts, resulting in the disappeared person being outside the protection of the law, is punishable by imprisonment for a term of three to seven years," the lawyer emphasized.
He also reported that law enforcement officers had searched the homes of all the individuals mentioned.
Media reports indicate that all the individuals mentioned were detained based on a statement from Father Aram Arakelyan, the former spiritual abbot of the Hovhann Monastery. Arakelyan has joined the Armenian authorities' anti-church campaign.
