ArmInfo. There is no project called the "Zangezur Corridor" on the sovereign territory of Armenia, including a communications project, and there cannot be one. Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Vahan Kostanyan stated this during a briefing on October 9.
"What the Azerbaijani authorities call the communications project through their territory is their business," the deputy minister said.
When asked by journalists to provide guarantees that a peace treaty with the Azerbaijani side would ultimately be signed, Kostanyan noted that he could not provide them on behalf of Azerbaijan. However, he noted that the statements made at the White House in August indicate that the region is entering an era of peace and stability. "We hope and are confident that the process will have a positive outcome. And we positively assess the momentum we see after the meeting at the White House," the deputy minister said.
When asked when the peace treaty would be signed, Kostanyan noted that the Armenian side is continuing to work towards this goal. He noted that Armenia has once again confirmed its readiness to sign and ratify the document. At the same time, Kostanyan noted that work is currently underway to unblock communications with American partners. "Discussions are currently underway; if we reach a concrete milestone, the public will be informed," he said.
As a reminder, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a joint declaration on achieving peace between the two countries in Washington, following a trilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump.
It is noted that the declaration by the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan following the White House meeting emphasizes the need to continue further efforts to achieve the signing and final ratification of the agreement. The parties also reaffirmed the importance of opening communications between the two countries for domestic, bilateral, and international transport to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the region and its neighbors based on respect for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and jurisdiction of states. These efforts include opening a direct link between the mainland of Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic via Armenia.
"Armenia will cooperate with the United States and jointly identified third parties to develop a framework for the Trump International Route for Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP) connectivity project in Armenia. We reaffirm our commitment to continue our efforts in good faith to achieve this goal as soon as possible," the declaration states.
Speaking at the 12th Summit of the Council of Heads of State of the Organization of Turkic States, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated that "another important outcome of the Washington summit was the opening of the Zangezur Corridor. The Zangezur Corridor is of great importance as a new transport artery and a second route within both the Middle Corridor and the North-South Corridor." In this regard, Nazeli Baghdasaryan, Press Secretary to the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, noted that the use of the term "Zangezur Corridor" was discussed at the October 2 meeting between Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan and President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev in Copenhagen.
Following the meeting between the Prime Minister of Armenia and the President of Azerbaijan in Copenhagen, both sides published press releases stating that both sides acknowledge that the TRIPP project applies to the territory of Armenia, and therefore, there are not and cannot be other projects on the territory of the Republic of Armenia.
