ArmInfo. What is currently being presented in Armenia as a "transport project" or "path to peace" could tomorrow become yet another violation of Armenia's sovereignty. Political scientist Suren Surenyants writes about this on his Facebook account.
According to him, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated at the Gabala Summit of Turkic-Speaking States that "the opening of the Zangezur Corridor was one of the most important results of the Washington Summit." The Gabala Declaration adopted following the summit also enshrines this same formulation as a key component of regional cooperation. At the same time, as Surenyants notes, while Baku effectively claims that the corridor idea is an implemented agreement, the Armenian Prime Minister's press secretary is trying to convince the public that Aliyev's words "do not apply to the territory of the Republic of Armenia."
"This response isn't a clear political position, but an attempt to create the illusion that everything can be explained 'in one's own way.' It's deja vu. We saw the same mistake in 2020, when Pashinyan tried to convince us that Point 9 of the November 9 statement didn't imply Russian control. This self-delusion ended with the destruction of Artsakh. Today, the same pattern is repeating itself.
Pashinyan is once again attempting to present an international document in his own interpretation, this time the Washington Declaration. However, history does not forgive such 'whims.' What is now being presented as a 'transport project' or a 'path to peace' could tomorrow become yet another violation of Armenia's sovereignty. In this situation, the authorities' silence or illusory statements can no longer be considered diplomatic restraint; they are political irresponsibility, which strikes at the very foundations of the state's sovereignty," the political scientist emphasized.
