ArmInfo. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, responded to a question from a member of parliament from the Euroconservative faction at PACE regarding the so-called "Zangezur corridor" in the context of the Washington Declaration.
Specifically, he was asked whether the creation of this corridor is equally beneficial to Armenia and Azerbaijan. He advised anyone asking such a question to first familiarize themselves with the documents signed in the American capital, as they are short-only one page long and consist of five points.
"The narrative you mentioned does not exist at all and is absent from these documents. I want to emphasize: you are using the phrase "Zangezur corridor." Where did you get that phrase? It's not in any document, never has been, and rest assured, will never be in any document agreed upon by Armenia and Azerbaijan," he emphasized.
The Prime Minister pointed out that the most important condition for the peace process is the use of legitimate and agreed-upon terminology. "Peace requires care. An important attribute of this care is the use of legitimate vocabulary. There isn't a single word in my speeches whose etymology I couldn't demonstrate based on the documents adopted in Washington," he emphasized.
Pashinyan noted that the expression "Zangezur Corridor" is a gross violation of the sovereignty of the Republic of Armenia. "I also asked my Azerbaijani counterpart to clarify where the "Zangezur Corridor" is located on the map, as if it turns out that "Zangezur Corridor" refers to Armenian territory, it would be a gross violation of the sovereignty of the Republic of Armenia." "No one has the right to name the territory of Armenia unless it is approved by the government or parliament of Armenia," the head of the Armenian cabinet stated.
The Prime Minister also mentioned that, in accordance with the Washington agreements, the parties agreed to open regional communication channels based on the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and jurisdiction of states, as well as the principle of reciprocity. Pashinyan added that, based on Washington documents, the TRIPP project, which was also signed by the President of Azerbaijan, is set to be implemented in Armenia. "Therefore, my call, my expectation, is that only legitimate terminology be used, and I expect our Azerbaijani partners to indicate on the map what they mean and which section they call the 'Zangezur Corridor.' If this in any way relates to the sovereign territory of Armenia, I am sorry but no one has the right to determine names on the territory of the Republic of Armenia. An opposite approach would violate Armenia's sovereignty." "I repeat, in the case of the territory of the Republic of Armenia, only the terminology determined by the Government of the Republic of Armenia, the Parliament, or the relevant bodies, or agreed upon with the Government of Armenia, may be used. Therefore, allow me to state that I strongly condemn the use of illegitimate language in this distinguished hall and institution," Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan concluded.
