ArmInfo. On September 23, Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to Hungary Haykak Arshamyan handed over his credentials to President of Hungary Dr. Tamas Sulyok.
As reported by the press service of the Armenian Foreign Ministry, during the tete-a-tete meeting following the official ceremony, the President of Hungary congratulated Ambassador Haykak Arshamyan on assuming his position and wished him success in fulfilling this responsible mission. During the meeting, the historical ties between Armenian and Hungarian people were highlighted along with the importance of continuously activating mutual contacts between the two societies. The sides also discussed the current developments in Armenia-Hungary relations in the fields of economy, education, culture and other areas, as well as the further opportunities for expanding bilateral cooperation.
Recall, diplomatic relations between Armenia and Hungary were frozen after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban reinstated Ramil Safarov as a national "hero" to Azerbaijan in 2012. Safarov had hacked to death Armenian officer Gurgen Margaryan with an axe. Margaryan was undergoing military training in Hungary.
Ten years later (December 2022), Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan met with his Hungarian counterpart Peter Szijjarto at the 29th OSCE Ministerial Meeting. Following the meeting, the two sides agreed to restore full diplomatic relations, expressing their intention to open a new chapter in Armenian- Hungarian relations based on mutual trust and respect for international law. In May 2023, Armenia appointed a non-resident ambassador to Hungary, Ashot Smbatyan. However, on June 5 of this year, he was recalled by the President of Armenia and Arshavyan was appointed in his place, with service residence in Budapest.
