ArmInfo. The 104th season of the Gabriel Sundukyan National Academic Theater opened with a temporary exhibition titled "Gabriel Sundukyan-200," during which the personal belongings of the renowned Armenian playwright were displayed in the theater's Winter Garden.
This initiative, implemented in collaboration with the E. Charents Museum of Literature and Art will be open for viewing until November of this year.
Sundukyan is considered one of the founders of Armenian professional theater. His entire literary career is closely intertwined with this field. He is also considered one of the key figures in critical realism in Armenian literature.
During the exhibition opening, Naira Shahvaladyan, head of the theater department at the Museum of Literature and Art, highlighted that this year marks not only the 200th anniversary of Sundukyan's birth, but also the 155th anniversary of his famous play "Pepo," and the 95th anniversary of its film adaptation.
Armen Elbakyan, artistic director of the National Theater, emphasized the significance of the exhibition despite it's small scope. Even if only one work by Gabriel Sundukyan were on display, it would still convey who he was and the enormous work he did not only for the development of theater in Armenia and Georgia. According to the artistic director, Sundukyan managed to create a diverse gallery of characters, a feat that few can achieve even today. He also highlighted the invaluable impact of Sundukyan's plays on future generations of theater professionals.
