ArmInfo. Today, the Anti-Corruption Court, chaired by Judge Sargis Petrosyan, continued its hearing of the case regarding the events of March 1, 2008, involving second President of Armenia Robert Kocharyan, former CSTO Secretary General Yuri Khachaturov, former Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan, and former Deputy Prime Minister Armen Gevorgyan.
The aforementioned four former high-ranking officials have been accused since 2018 of either overthrowing the constitutional order or aiding the constitutional order during the events of 2008.
As Kocharyan's lawyer, Aram Orbelyan, told reporters, everyone agrees that the events of March 1st must be fully resolved. However, this doesn't justify the authorities achieving resolution through another human rights violation-singling out one person, declaring him guilty, and then claiming the case is solved.
"For us, this whole thing is an anomaly-bringing the legal successors of victims into the courtroom to create an emotional atmosphere. The Prosecutor General of Armenia mentioned in parliament that while the deadlines have passed, there may be a question of compensation that could be raised. In other words, we see an artificial process happening, instead of administering justice-that is, admitting that, yes, this charge is closed, the defendants are acquitted, and that's it. Justice cannot be a continuous process," the lawyer said.
