ArmInfo. All political structures, including the Armenian Apostolic Church, that deal with national issues are under attack from the Armenian authorities. This was stated by Ishkhan Saghatelyan, a representative of the Supreme Body of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF Dashnaktsutyun) and member of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia, at the Yerablur military cemetery memorial complex on September 19.
According to him, the authorities' attacks on the AAC are not accidental, as the Holy Church is an institution that upholds national values and the self-preservation of the Armenian people. Saghatelyan emphasized that the AAC is the church of every Armenian, and it is essential that every member of the nation stand with the Church.
Saghatelyan, along with other political figures, participated in a flower-laying ceremony in memory of those killed as a result of Azerbaijan's aggression against Artsakh on September 19, 2023, when 244 people died, 11 of whom were civilians. Currently, 11 people remain missing, and more than two dozen Armenians are in Azerbaijani captivity and facing trial on trumped-up charges.
In this regard, responding to a question about the position of the Armenian authorities, who demonstrated complete inaction during that period and justified this inaction by the lack of a mandate for Nagorno- Karabakh, the MP recalled that in 2021, representatives of official Yerevan declared the de-occupation of Artsakh in their campaign promises.
In doing so, they were guided by the slogan that Artsakh should not be part of Azerbaijan. However, not only Artsakh but also part of Armenia's territory was surrendered. At the same time, as Sagatelyan noted, the authorities try to find their own reasons for every concession.
"This can only happen in Armenia, where we lost the war, surrendered Artsakh, part of Armenia's territory, and suddenly discover the country has become much more sovereign," Saghatelyan noted, adding that the current head of the Armenian state has become a tool in the hands of the Turks and Azerbaijanis. "The only person responsible for the depopulation of Artsakh is Nikol Pashinyan, who, since the moment of Baku's aggression against the people of Artsakh, has legitimized Ilham Aliyev's actions. Moreover, all this is happening against the backdrop of Pashinyan recognizing Artsakh as part of Azerbaijan," said the ARF party representative. He added that one day, Nikol Pashinyan will reveal what he discussed with Ilham Aliyev on the eve of the aggression, and whether he gave Azerbaijan guarantees of non-aggression by Armenia, while silently observing the genocide unfolding in Nagorno-Karabakh. "I am more than confident that such an agreement existed, and these guarantees were given," Saghatelyan concluded.
