ArmInfo. The participation of extra-regional players in the affairs of the South Caucasus, including the issue of unblocking communications, should be guided, first and foremost, by the interests of the countries in the region and their immediate neighbors, as stated by Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, during a weekly briefing on September 12.
When asked whether the Russian Federation has a final understanding of how the so-called "Trump Route" through the Syunik region of Armenia will function, Zakharova said that Moscow will be able to form a final understanding of how this transport route will work in practice once they become familiar with the specific details of this project. According to her, this has not happened yet.
"It is also necessary to consider several additional factors: Armenia is part of the single customs space of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), the South Caucasus Railway is a subsidiary of Russian Railways, and manages the railway networks of Armenia. Russian border guards, in accordance with the international agreement, ensure security in the area where the mentioned route will approximately pass," the diplomat said.
Zakharova, mentioning the activities of the trilateral working group on unblocking regional communications at the level of the deputy prime ministers of Armenia, Azerbaijan and the Russian Federation. She added that the developments within this format remain relevant.
"Moscow expects to continue fruitful cooperation with the Armenian side on this and other topics," the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry concluded.
