ArmInfo. Strengthening peace and stability in the South Caucasus is Russia's unshakeable priority, as stated by Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, during a weekly briefing on September 12.
According to her, the Russian Federation has consistently advocated for the long-awaited reconciliation between Baku and Yerevan to be sustainable. "This is a necessary condition for the prosperity of the entire region. Russia's contribution to the process of normalizing interstate relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia is difficult to overestimate," the Russian diplomat said.
Zakharova added that the current stage of Armenian-Azerbaijani normalization had began with the active assistance and personal participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. In this regard, she recalled the trilateral agreements at the highest level between Armenia, Azerbaijan and the Russian Federation in the period from 2020 to 2022 and a set of measures towards normalization. The diplomat added that the developments made with the efforts of the Russian Federation not only have not lost their relevance, but are also successfully used by Azerbaijani and Armenian partners.
"In this context, we welcome the progress achieved. Nevertheless, Baku and Yerevan have a lot to, as they themselves noted. Particularly, to overcome the remaining differences, sign a peace treaty, complete the delimitation and demarcation of the border on fair grounds, unblock transport communications, and do this in the interests of both countries and the largest political and economic neighbors of the region. These include Russia, Iran, and Turkey," she added.
Additionally, she expressed confidence that the regional platform "3 + 3" would be a good platform for discussing the normalization of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations. "We expect our Azerbaijani and Armenian colleagues to take effective steps to quickly agree on the venue and dates of the next meeting of the heads of foreign policy departments of the participants of this platform. For our part, we confirm our readiness to provide our partners with the necessary assistance on the entire spectrum of matters," Zakharova concluded.
