
ArmInfo. As of September 2, more than 16 thousand internally displaced persons from Nagorno-Karabakh have received citizenship of the Republic of Armenia, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Armen Ghazaryan said at a meeting of the NA Standing Committee on Defense and Security on September 5.
According to him, 11,259 of them received RA citizenship by decree of the country's president. In addition, due to the citizenship of their parents, more than 5 thousand minors received RA passports.
At the same time, the deputy minister noted that if, within the framework of the standard procedure, applications for obtaining RA citizenship are considered within ninety working days from the date of receipt by the Migration and Citizenship Service of the RA Ministry of Internal Affairs, then in the case of IDPs from Artsakh, the period is reduced to 2 months.
Having RA citizenship is a mandatory condition for participation in the program for providing housing to IDPs from Artsakh.
Internally displaced persons from Nagorno-Karabakh are exempt from paying the state fee for obtaining Armenian citizenship from September 1, 2025. Meanwhile, in January of this year, the state fee was increased 50 times, it amounted to 50 thousand drams (about $ 110).
On September 19, 2023, Azerbaijan, under the pretext of an "anti-terrorist operation", committed another act of aggression against Artsakh. This was preceded by an almost 10-month blockade of the unrecognized republic. Since the enemy aggression that began in the fall of 2020, which in September 2023 ended in the complete ethnic cleansing of Artsakh, over 150 thousand Artsakh residents have lost their homeland and become refugees.
