ArmInfo. The peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, signed with the participation of the United States, is a common victory; Russia has been conducting peacekeeping work in the region for a long time. This was stated to TASS by the first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots Viktor Vodolatsky.
"The declaration on a peaceful settlement between Baku and Yerevan is a common victory, a victory of reason," the agency's source said, commenting on Trump's nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize.
As Vodolatsky noted, it was the Russian Federation that stood at the origins of the peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, conducting peacekeeping work and bringing the positions of Baku and Yerevan closer together.
The Russian side wants peace for the republics that are part of the CIS structure, the State Duma deputy emphasized. He added that Russia should work "more clearly and toughly" on Transcaucasia after the signing of the agreement. "The most important thing is that the Anglo-Saxons are not able to create a point of tension in Transcaucasia, which they are striving for. They have always wanted to raise the Caucasus against Russia. And God forbid that they, through their influence on these peace processes that are taking place between Armenia and Azerbaijan, could begin to implement their cunning plan, creating a point of conflict or irritation there. Therefore, Russia is monitoring this, naturally, the sovereignty and security of our state is a priority for our president, and we need to work more clearly and tougher on the Transcaucasian republics," the agency's interlocutor said.
On August 8, following a trilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a joint declaration on a peaceful settlement between Baku and Yerevan.
