ArmInfo. Former member of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Anahit Bakhshyan criticized the provisions of the new textbook on the history of Armenia concerning the terrorist act committed in the country's parliament on October 27, 1999.
"The new textbook on the history of Armenia very briefly mentions the fact of state terrorism on October 27, 1999. The authors did not take care to present the historical consequences of the massacre in the Armenian parliament. History, as a science, should give students the ability and skills to analyze historical events, compare facts, draw parallels between the state decapitated on October 27, 1999, and today's reality, so that they, as citizens of the Republic of Armenia, prevent such attempts in their future workplaces and are convinced that Armenia is forever," noted Anahit Bakhshyan, whose husband Yuri Bakhshyan also became a victim of the terrorist attack. According to Anahit Bakhshyan, the authors of the textbook, unfortunately, also did not take care to allocate two more lines for the names and surnames of six other political figures killed that day. "These people, in my opinion, were not random citizens, which, in my opinion, sadly characterizes the quality of the Armenian history textbook," the former MP emphasized.
On October 27, 1999, a group of terrorists stormed the parliament and shot dead Armenian Prime Minister Vazgen Sargsyan, RA NA Speaker Karen Demirchyan, Vice Speakers Yuri Bakhshyan and Ruben Miroyan, Minister of Operational Issues Leonard Petrosyan, and MPs Armenak Armenakyan, Mikael Kotanyan, and Henrik Abrahamyan. The terrorist group included former journalist Nairi Hunanyan, who worked for some time on Armenian television, his brother Karen Hunanyan, their uncle Vram Galstyan, as well as Derenik Bejanyan and Ashot Knyazyan. Their trial began on February 15, 2001. On December 2, 2003, the Court of First Instance of Center-Nork-Marash sentenced the brothers Nairi and Karen Hunanyan, Edik Grigoryan, Vram Galstyan (he died in prison in 2004, according to the official version, having committed suicide), Derenik Bejanyan and Ashot Knyazyan to life imprisonment. Hamlet Stepanyan was sentenced to 14 years in prison (In May 2010, his body was found in his bed in the Nubarashen Penitentiary). All seven were found guilty of treason and terrorism. The RA Court of Cassation upheld the sentence.
