By initialing the peace agreement and both acknoweldging the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Armenia and Azerbaijan, these countries have taken important steps towards a just and durable peace for the peoples of the region, as noted in a statement issued by Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand.
According to her statement, Canada commends the leadership of US President Donald Trump, the achievements made in Washington, in brokering the agreement. Agreements of this nature, reached through diplomatic negotiations, provide a clear path toward a comprehensive peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan that will help to address the remaining issue- including the release of all Armenian detainees and prisoners of war, the safe and dignified right of return of Armenian civilians, and the preservation of cultural heritage.
"Canada takes note of the decision to disband the OSCE Minsk Group and remains committed to support any future mechanisms that will ensure the principles of the non-use of force and, the respect of the territorial integrity and the right to self-determination. Canada reaffirms its commitment for a long-term peace, stability, and prosperity in the South Caucasus, including the achievement of a negotiated political solution to Nagorno-Karabakh issue," the statement reads.
