ArmInfo. "Samvel Karapetyan will be the head of our team, the leader of our political direction, and we will move forward under his working leadership," Narek Karapetyan, nephew of Russian businessman Samvel Karapetyan, who was arrested in Yerevan, told journalists in the courtyard of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin.
"That is, in all matters - economic, social, foreign policy - we will follow the course set by him. And the team will be formed on the basis of professionalism," said Narek Karapetyan.
In this vein, he recalled that according to the Constitution of Armenia, the ruling party is elected by the people and it is the party that nominates a candidate for the post of head of government.
"In a parliamentary system, it is very important for the ruling party, elected by the people's votes, to propose a candidate for prime minister and have the opportunity to replace him if he does not work well. It is very important for the winning force to propose professional leaders, and not a person who must sit in the chair, hold on to it and, even in case of mistakes, will not want to leave this post. This is what leads to all these upheavals," he concluded.
Philanthropist and president of the Tashir Group of Companies Samvel Karapetyan was detained on the night of June 18 in Yerevan by law enforcement agencies of Armenia after he expressed support for the Armenian Apostolic Church. In response, this was followed by open threats from the prime minister. On the night of June 19, the Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction arrested Samvel Karapetyan for two months. He is being held in the Yerevan-Kentron Penitentiary Institution (the well-known "KGB basement" in the building of the National Security Service of Armenia). He is accused of publicly calling for the seizure of power in the country. Karapetyan does not admit guilt. On July 4, during a rally in support of Karapetyan, the creation of a new political force was announced.
