
ArmInfo. Armenia's mountain ecosystems are among the most vulnerable, as stated by Environment Minister Hambardzum Matevosyan during an expert session on "How to Conserve the Global Water Balance, " held in Altai as part of the international conference on Nature and Environmental Protection.
As ArmInfo was informed by the press service of the Ministry, in his speech, Matevosyan addressed the adverse impacts of climate change on water resources, noting that reducing precipitation and decreasing water reserves increase the vulnerability of the water sector. The Minister emphasized the importance of maintain the water balance of Lake Sevan and restoring ecosystems.
The Minister presented the measures being undertaken by the Armenian government to introduce water- saving technologies and drip irrigation systems. He also spoke about projects aimed at reducing losses within water systems, legislative reforms in water resources management, and the approval of a five year national climate change adaptation program (2022-2026).
During the conference, Matevosyan underscored the need for international cooperation and the exchange of expertise. In this context, he highlighted the significance of the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17), scheduled to be held in Armenia in 2026, and invited partners to actively participate. The Minister expressed confidence that, thanks to joint efforts and support from international partners, an effective and sustainable water resources management system can be established to contribute to the development of both Armenia and the entire region.
