ArmInfo. The Belgian House of Representatives unanimously adopted a resolution during its plenary session on July 17, condemning Azerbaijan's military attack against the Armenians of Artsakh and its violation of international law.
According to the correspondent of Armenpress in Brussels, the adopted resolution states that Azerbaijan's actions against Nagorno-Karabakh and its Armenian population contradict the fundamental norms of international law. The Belgian legislative body emphasized that stable and long-term peace in the region is possible only if the territorial integrity of Armenia and Azerbaijan is mutually respected. The resolution clearly condemned the threats and rhetoric of the Azerbaijani authorities in the context of the "Western Azerbaijan" speech.
The resolution also addresses Baku's illegal detention and incomprehensible trials of former leaders of Nagorno-Karabakh. Strongly condemning this policy of Azerbaijan, the latter is called on to release all Armenian prisoners and guarantee a fair trial. The House of Representatives demands that Azerbaijan ensure the preservation of the cultural and religious heritage of Nagorno-Karabakh and calls for allowing a UNESCO mission to enter the area to assess the damage.
The resolution welcomes the initiative for a peace agreement and stresses the urgency of its signing. It calls on all parties to respect the provisions of the agreement. The House of Representatives urges the Belgian government to support the international investigation into war crimes, expand Belgium's consular presence in Armenia, and deepen humanitarian and military cooperation with official Yerevan.
The adopted resolution also calls on the EU to apply targeted sanctions against human rights violators, expand the EU monitoring mission in Armenia, and review EU-Azerbaijan relations if Baku does not demonstrate genuine willingness to achieve peace.
Co-author of the resolution, member of the Belgian House of Representatives, Michel de Maegde, in an interview with "Armenpress" in Brussels, speaking about the importance of the resolution, noted that on the one hand there is Azerbaijan, which constantly puts forward new preconditions for peace, and on the other hand there is Armenia, which is open to dialogue and demands only one thing - respect for its sovereignty. "We must remain on the side of law and justice. Belgium must continue to support Armenia and further deepen its cooperation with it. The vote on this text is an important stage in this process, another proof of the friendship between our two peoples," said Maegd.
