During the 47th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee (Paris), two applications submitted by Armenia for the inclusion of Yerevan's Urartian heritage, the Garni Archaeological Complex and the Symphony of Stones natural monument, in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List were discussed and approved.
As reported by the press service of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, the session is taking place in the capital of France from July 6 to 16. The Armenian delegation is led by Aram Hakobyan, Ambassador of Armenia to UNESCO. Harutyun Vanyan, Head of the Department for Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments, is participating in the session from the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports as the coordinator of the 1972 Convention. The main UNESCO World Heritage List includes the monasteries of Sanahin and Haghpat, Echmiadzin, churches, the ancient temple of Zvartnots, the monastery of Geghard and the upper part of the Azat River valley.
Registration of monuments in the preliminary list is a mandatory and preliminary condition for the registration of new monuments in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Efforts in this direction are ongoing.
