Expecting 2026 elections amid promises given to external forces  extremely risky - opposition MP

ArmInfo.  The Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) is one of those forces in the political arena that initially believed that, given the pre-election logic and promises made to external forces, expecting elections in 2026 was extremely risky. This was stated by Tigran Abrahamyan, a member of the National  Assembly from the opposition faction With Honor, in connection with the persecution of opposition figures in the country. 

As the deputy explained, the ruling force can take steps that could create an unprecedented situation before the 2026 elections, which will lead to irreparable losses for the country, and the elections themselves will not change the current state of affairs. "Over the past 3-4 months, the discourse within the opposition field and the political confrontation that has developed around it have focused on the 2026 elections and the vote of no confidence in the current government. Recent events show that the government is actively introducing new challenges to the country. In such conditions, even  the most optimistic observers understand that elections for the  current leadership are becoming only a formal process aimed at preserving their power.  Either they will continue to act until only they and their "clients" remain, or even if the opposition succeeds, power will be taken away by force," Abramyan is sure.

According to the MP, in the current situation, the opposition forces have two options: to start political consultations on the issue of expressing a vote of no confidence in the government, which is on the agenda, or to offer an alternative solution arising from the unprecedented situation in the country. However, he did not explain what he meant by the phrase "alternative solutions".

Recall that a vote of no confidence in the current Prime Minister can be discussed in the Armenian parliament only if at least 36 MPs provide the signatures necessary to begin the process. The two opposition factions ("Armenia" and "I have the honor") together make up 34 MPs. Another four have independent status. In order to express no confidence in the head of government, at least 54 MPs out of 107 must vote for impeachment.
