ArmInfo. The official opening of the monument to the great Charles Aznavour - a French chansonnier of Armenian origin, a national hero of Armenia, an outstanding artist, singer, composer, poet - will take place on July 18, at 11:00, on the square of the same name in Yerevan.
Vice-Mayor of Yerevan Levon Oganesyan announced this during a working meeting of the city hall, noting that the latter will be installed in the city on July 16. He said that the work on the construction of the monument is in the final stage, and the final approvals with the sculptor and other partners took place on July 4.
"We discussed all current issues, clarified the remaining details and determined the course of the final work," the vice-mayor noted, reporting that the casting of the monument was carried out in Gyumri.
Oganesyan also noted that delegations from Paris and the Ile-de-France region will also attend the opening ceremony of the Aznavour monument.
In turn, Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan added that this is an exceptional case when the mayor's office has assumed all the expenses for the installation of the monument. Previously, as he noted, monuments were donated to the city.
"It is very important that this is our initiative," the mayor emphasized, recalling that the process of selecting the sketch lasted a long time together with the Aznavour Foundation and Charles Aznavour's son, Nicolas Aznavour. "I am sure that we made the right choice," Avinyan noted.
The author of the sculpture of Charles Aznavour, which will be installed on the square of the same name in Yerevan, was David Minasyan. The design was chosen in a closed vote by the Professional Commission, which included 11 people, including members of Charles Aznavour's family - son Nicolas Aznavour and his wife Christina Aznavour, representatives of the city hall - Mayor Tigran Avinyan and Vice Mayor Levon Hovhannisyan, Deputy Director of the Charles Aznavour Foundation Karine Evoyan, Director of the Museum of Modern Art Nune Avetisyan, Chairman of the Union of Artists of Armenia Suren Safaryan, sculptor Albert Vardanyan, architect Alexander Badalyan and others. 9 out of 11 members of the Commission voted for the design by David Minasyan.
It was initially announced that the monument to Aznavour would be erected in Yerevan in October 2024, which marked the 100th anniversary of the artist's birth. However, the deadline was later postponed to 2025. At first, they said that the monument would appear on Aznavour Square in November 2025, then they named the date of May 22 - the 101st anniversary of Chansonnier's birthday. And only in May of this year, at the next meeting of the city hall, they announced a new date, stating that the monument to Aznavour would be erected in Yerevan in July of this year.
