ArmInfo. The European Union is encouraged by the peace process between Yerevan and Baku and would like to see it finalized as soon as possible, as stated by Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, at a joint press conference with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan.
"We need more stability in the world, not only in the region. I said the same in Baku. When we discuss different options for interconnectedness, including the connection of Europe with Asia, it is important to do it as soon as possible," Kallas said. The EU representative also stated that the European Union promotes the Armenian-Azerbaijani settlement based on the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and inviolability of borders, and that there is no alternative to these principles.
In turn, Mirzoyan, addressing the fact that the approval of the draft peace agreement was announced 4 months ago, and the process stalled due to Baku's new conditions, why then contacts, agreed with the statement about the new demands - the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group and amendments to the country's Constitution.
The Armenian minister reiterated that the dissolution of the OSCE MG is acceptable for Yerevan, as the establishment of peace is an institutional process. "Azerbaijan's evasion gives reason to think that the dissolution of the MG for Baku may serve other purposes that will violate our territorial integrity. We want to make sure that we are establishing a full-fledged peace, then the OSCE MG is not needed," Mirzoyan added.
Regarding the Constitution, the minister once again reiterated his earlier statements, emphasizing that this is Armenia's internal agenda. He recalled that the current government has been talking about constitutional reforms since 2018 and it is highly likely that they will be implemented after the next elections. "Contacts are necessary to explain all this to each other, address issues and find solutions. And they will persist in the future. I hope that these discussions will lead to the signing of an agreement and the resolution of other issues," Mirzoyan concluded.
