ArmInfo. On the occasion of the Day of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces, the Geghard Foundation published a report testifying to the atrocities committed by the Azerbaijani army in Artsakh and Armenia, both in peacetime and wartime. In particular, the Foundation presented several stages concerning the periods of the 4-day April War of 2016 and the 44-day Artsakh War of 2020, and several cases registered during peacetime.
The report says that in 2010, 20-year-old Manvel Saribekyan, who lived in the border town of Tavush, got lost due to fog and ended up on the enemy side. The Azerbaijani military police detained him, and he was later killed in an Azerbaijani prison. The authorities of this country presented the death of the Armenian citizen as a suicide. In 2014, Azerbaijani saboteurs, crossing the state border of Nagorno-Karabakh, captured and then killed 17-year-old resident Smbat Tsakanyan. His body was found in a forest area with multiple gunshot wounds.
And another case in 2014, when 77-year-old Mamikon Khojoyan got lost on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border during the harvest. He was also captured by the Azerbaijani military. After 35 days of imprisonment, he returned to Armenia with traces of numerous tortures. In the same year, a resident of the village of Chinar, Karen Petrosyan, was captured by the Azerbaijanis on August 7. He lived in Azerbaijani captivity for only 24 hours. According to the assurances of the Azerbaijani side, the young man died of acute heart failure, but after a forensic examination in Armenia, it was revealed that Karen Petrosyan did not have any heart problems and was absolutely healthy. During the 4-day April war in 2016, on April 2, the Azerbaijani special forces tortured elderly members of the Khalapyan family, living in the village of Talish, after which they shot and mocked their bodies.
In the period from 2020 to 2023 (during and after the 44-day Artsakh war), numerous cases of torture and violence against elderly people were registered in the captured settlements. In Stepanakert alone, from September 27 to November 10, at least 13 civilians were killed and 51 were wounded from shelling of civilian infrastructure.
During and after the 44-day war, videos of torture and violence by the Azerbaijani military against Armenian prisoners of war and civilians were regularly published online. During this period, 12 people were tortured and killed by the Azerbaijani Armed Forces, the youngest of whom was 44 years old, the oldest 82.
Another manifestation of the inhumane treatment of the Azerbaijani army was recorded on September 13, 2022, when the latter invaded the sovereign territory of Armenia. At Lake Sev Lich (Syunik region), the Azerbaijanis mass-executed 8 prisoners, according to other sources 9.
