On June 6, Chairman of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Alen Simonyan received a delegation headed by Speaker of the Council of the Federation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Valentina Matviyenko. As reported by the press service of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia, Simonyan first held a one-on-one meeting with his Russian counterpart, which was followed by a meeting in an expanded format.
The Speaker of the National Assembly thanked Valentina Matviyenko for her visit to Armenia, noting that such mutual visits are important from the point of view of developing bilateral relations, in particular, emphasizing the fact that the visit is taking place in the year of the 80th anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War.
In turn, the Speaker of the Federation Council thanked Alen Simonyan for the warm welcome. During the meeting, the interlocutors discussed various issues on the bilateral agenda, both political and economic, educational and cultural, pointing out, among other things, the importance of developing inter- parliamentary cooperation.
Regional developments were mentioned separately. The Speaker of the National Assembly reaffirmed Armenia's position on establishing lasting peace in the region, noting that Armenia is waiting for the signing of a peace treaty with the Azerbaijani side on the already agreed document.
The Chairperson of the Federation Council, in turn, emphasized that the Russian Federation is a supporter of peace and stability in the region.
Alen Simonyan drew the attention of his Russian counterpart to the problem of prisoners of war illegally detained in Azerbaijan and missing persons.
Then, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia and the Chairman of the Federation Council took part in the official opening of the 39th meeting of the Interparliamentary Commission on Cooperation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation and the National Assembly of Armenia.
Alen Simonyan and Valentina Matvienko also toured the Academy of Sciences building and took part in the exhibition "The Road to Sanahin: The History of One Orphanage", materials for which were provided by the Committee for Culture of St. Petersburg and the Museum "State Memorial Complex of the Defense and Siege of Leningrad".
