ArmInfo. Armenia should not reject anyone who speaks about the Armenian Genocide, as stated by genocide scholar, researcher and archivist of the Armenian Diaspora, Ara Ketibyan, during a press conference in Yerevan on May 29.
During the event, Ketibian presented valuable research that he has been conducting for decades on the Armenian Genocide and related topics. Ketibian called it unacceptable that the fact of the Genocide is no longer included in the country's foreign policy agenda, as the current authorities of Armenia have repeatedly stated. Ketibian believes that the efforts towards the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire should be pursued with increased vigor. He also believes that some may discuss the Armenian Genocide for their own selfish reasons.
"Countries that talk about the Armenian Genocide or recognize it do not always do so for the sake of justice. Sometimes it is necessary to gain certain advantages, for example, during elections, to secure the necessary number of votes," Ketibian noted. To support his statement, the genocide scholar used the example of the United States. He noted that in the past, America's stance on the Armenian Genocide differed greatly from its current position. According to Previously, American policy was guided by the principle of "non-interference in overseas affairs."
According to the genocide scholar, such a position of the American authorities did not stop the Armenian diaspora from advocating for the issue, eventually leading to success. Ketibian believes that if the current Armenian authorities fail to push this matter in the international arena, progress could halt, and the diaspora's efforts might lose effectiveness without state support, potentially dragging on for decades.
