ArmInfo. The legislative framework for television and radio broadcasting in Armenia enables the country to become a battleground for information wars. Tigran Hakobyan, Chairman of the Television and Radio Commission of Armenia, made this statement during a meeting with the EU Ambassador to Armenia, Vassilis Maragos, and Director of Strategic Communications of the EU External Action Service, Aude Maio-Coliche
He also noted that the Commission, as a regulatory body, is in no way satisfied with the laudatory statements about Armenia's 34th position in the Press Freedom Index. He highlighted several challenges and threats facing the sphere. Hakobyan named the spread of propaganda and hate speech, the absence of Internet regulations, the influence of foreign broadcasters and the spread of misinformation as the primary concerns in the field.
The Chairman of the Television and Radio Commission highly appreciated the ongoing cooperation and professional dialogue between Armenia and the European Union in enhancing the media sector and promoting democratic values.
As stated in the Commission's official statement, the main topics of discussions include ensuring freedom of speech and regulating the broadcasting sphere to create a socially useful, transparent and responsible media environment. The meeting participants stressed the importance of enhancing mutual understanding and partnership in developing a media policy that promotes media stability, digital security and protects public interests. The Ambassador Stressing highlighted the Commission's role in developing the media sphere and emphasized the importance of cooperation with the EU in the legislative sphere.
