ArmInfo. Americanist Suren Sargsyan assessed the statements made by US Secretary of State Mark Rubio during the hearings of the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Armenian-Azerbaijani relations.
The expert, pointing out the importance of these statements, suggested familiarizing himself with their content.
"Considering the importance of Secretary Rubio's statement during the hearings of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, it should be given in a literal translation.
In response to a question from Congressman Smith, Rubio, in particular, answered: "As for Azerbaijan, our main focus is on establishing peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia. There is a real danger of a conflict, which we are trying to prevent. Our teams are very actively involved in this process, trying to make this a reality and prevent possible military intervention. Of course, in the context of these conversations, the issues of prisoners and human rights are of paramount importance," Sargsyan wrote on his Facebook page.
According to the Americanist, first of all, it is necessary to take into account that Rubio is not only the Secretary of State, but also Trump's acting national security adviser.
"In essence, he heads two competing structures whose approaches are essentially identical. Rubio assesses the danger of interference as real. In fact, at the moment, the American interest is to have relative calm in the South Caucasus while Washington negotiates with Tehran and Moscow.
At the same time, Trump's positioning as a "bringer of peace throughout the world" also suggests that Washington does not need additional headaches, especially in the form of armed conflicts," Sargsyan concluded.
