ArmInfo. A monument to the hero of the Great Patriotic War, liberator and Honorary Citizen of the city Ghukas Madoyan has been erected in Rostov-on-Don. The initiative of the Nakhichevan-on-Don Armenian community was supported by the regional and city authorities, and on May 6, a solemn ceremony of opening the monument took place on Madoyan Avenue.
As reported by the Nakhichevan-on-Don Armenian community, it was thanks to the efforts of the Armenian commander and his battalion that in February 1943 it was possible to organize a heroic defense of the Rostov railway station and liberate the city from the fascist invaders. For a week, the Red Army soldiers under the command of Ghukas Madoyan repelled fierce attacks of the enemy and maintained control over the most important railway junction, being in an absolute minority. Madoyan's battalion performed a real feat, and on February 14, Rostov-on-Don was liberated.
The perpetuation of the memory of Hero of the Soviet Union Gukas Madoyan became an important event for the entire city. The grand opening was attended by Acting Governor of the Rostov Region Yuri Slyusar, head of the Federal Agency for Ethnic Affairs Igor Barinov, head of the city of Rostov-on-Don Alexander Skryabin, chairman of the board of the "Nakhichevan-on-Don Armenian Community" Harutyun Surmalyan, Consul General of Armenia in the Southern and North Caucasian Federal Districts Levon Minasyan and other guests.
The event was attended by the grandson and great-grandson of Gukas Madoyan, who specially arrived from Yerevan.
The whole world learned about the feat of Senior Lieutenant Gukas Madoyan in 1943. And it is important to preserve and value the memory of this outstanding person, as well as the memory of all those who defended the Motherland during the Great Patriotic War.
The installation of the monument and the improvement of the surrounding area were initiated and financed by members of the Nakhichevan-on-Don Armenian community.
