ArmInfo. In Armenia, no political force should believe that violence is an acceptable means to solve any issues. Artur Sakunts, human rights activist and head of the Helsinki Citizens' Assembly Vanadzor office, stated this at a press conference in Yerevan on May 2, commenting on the incident involving the beating of activist Artur Chakhoyan by an official and his subordinates.
Sakunts explained that these actions are a consequence of a lack of state thinking and equal responsibility before the law. He emphasized that in a democratic state, responsibility should first lie with the authorities, and then with citizens in case of a law violation. Sakunts then expressed concern that the staff of the Nor- Nork district administration are taking on the functions of law enforcement agencies, which is unacceptable. Additionally, Sakunts pointed out that those in power should be ready for criticism from citizens and to resolve issues that arise, without resorting to violence. Touching upon the statement by the leader of the Republic party, Aram Sargsyan, that a similar situation could be repeated in other districts due to the planned nature of the situation, Sakunts noted that the authorities must remember their responsibility to citizens, and not prioritize party interests. He expressed hope that the investigation will be conducted objectively and transparently, and that those who used violence will be punished.
