ArmInfo. The family of the former state minister of Artsakh and philanthropist Ruben Vardanyan expressed condolences to all Catholics around the world and appealed to the Holy See to continue the work of Pope Francis, making efforts to free Armenian prisoners.
The publication was posted on Ruben Vardanyan's official Facebook page and reads as follows: "The Vartanyan family expresses deep condolences to all Catholics. Our thoughts are with those gathered in St. Peter's Square and with all Catholics in the world.
We call on the Holy See, respecting the legacy of Pope Francis, to take steps to secure the release of 23 Armenian prisoners, including Ruben Vardanyan, who are being held unjustly. The Holy See can play an important role in diplomatic efforts to secure their release, while remaining true to Pope Francis's commitment to the ideals of justice and human dignity. Their continued detention goes against the principles of peace and reconciliation that Pope Francis has consistently followed throughout his pontificate. As he once stated: "Religions cannot be used to justify war. Only peace is sacred." We call on the Church to put these words into practice by supporting our plea for the immediate release of the Armenian prisoners. These Christians deserve protection from persecution, as they are facing severe trials today precisely because of their faith. The time to act is now. We call on all people of conscience to join our call for justice and freedom - in support of the 23 Armenian prisoners, including Ruben Vardanyan, who continue to be held captive only because of their beliefs and heritage."
