ArmInfo. In Geneva, Deputy Minister of Justice of Armenia Anna Karapetyan brought to the attention of the UN Committee Against Torture issues regarding the sham trials of Artsakh's military-political leadership and other hostages held in Azerbaijani prisons.
As reported by the press service of the Ministry of Justice of Armenia, the issue of prisoners of war was voiced by the Deputy Minister of Justice at the 82nd session of the UN Committee Against Torture, held in Switzerland. The session also included discussions on Armenia's fifth periodic report.
In her speech, Karapetyan emphasized Armenia's commitment to the prohibition of torture and other forms of inhuman treatment, as well as compliance with international obligations in this area. The Deputy Minister presented the steps taken by Armenia in recent years, both in the context of legislative reforms and in practical application. She mentioned the adoption of the updated criminal, procedural and penal codes, as well as the efforts to improve conditions in penal institutions and places of detention, enhance medical services, reform the police and implement effective tools for registering cases of torture and ill-treatment. Karapetyan also addressed the issues of combating criminal subculture, enhancing the qualifications of law enforcement officers and raising awareness among judges. Following the discussions, the committee will formulate its final comments, which are expected to be published early next month.
