ArmInfo. The fake news circulating on social networks regarding the diplomatic negotiations in the US Congress in 2007 on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, is not based on the Wikileaks files. Former Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian wrote this on his Facebook page, presenting several key comments on this issue.
The diplomat emphasized that the author of the message, to which the distributors of fake news refer, is simply lying. The former head of the Armenian Foreign Ministry clarified that the comments and conclusions cannot be based on the original content of the Wikileaks document and the essence of the discussions reflected in it. To back up his statement, he provided the document as evidence. He also pointed out that at that time, relations between the United States and Turkey were tense. "The US envoy arrived in Armenia with a request for assistance in postponing the recognition of the Armenian Genocide in Congress. The main goal of the discussions was to shift US pressure from Armenia to Turkey. Those who criticize the ideas outlined in the document do not understand the essence and goals of diplomacy," Oskanian noted.
Further, the ex-minister noted that the disseminators of these falsehoods are the same people who previously welcomed the surrender of Artsakh to Azerbaijan and tried to deny the Armenian Genocide. According to him, they are in a precarious position and are unsuccessfully trying to shift blame onto others. "Today they are simply hanging in the balance, trying in vain to blame others, particularly, those who have secured Artsakh's right to self-determination through a referendum and under whose leadership 15 states recognized the Armenian Genocide. We can only feel sorry for them, but its critical to ensure that they are kept away from the levers of power. The harm they have caused to Armenia and all Armenians has already exceeded astronomical proportions," Vartan Oskanian concluded.
