ArmInfo. Moscow is convinced that the consistent expansion of the Russian presence in the strategically important region in the south of Armenia meets the long-term interests of both Armenia, Russia, as well as the region as a whole. This was stated on April 9 during a weekly briefing by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, in response to a question about the progress of opening the Russian Consulate General in Kapan, in the Syunik region of Armenia.
"Considering the traditional tasks that Russian consular offices abroad solve, this step is capable of giving, as we believe, a significant impetus to deepening trade and investment, scientific and educational, cultural and humanitarian cooperation and the establishment of mutually beneficial ties between this territory and Russian regions," the Russian diplomat added. According to her, the promotion of the economic agenda between the two countries in Syunik is becoming increasingly important within the framework of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). Zakharova noted that this is also due to Iran's recent ratification of the document on Free Trade with the EAEU and recalled that the Syunik region borders Iran. The diplomat believes that given the above, this aspect should also be taken into account.
"All of this will serve as insurance for the dynamic, peaceful, and safe development of the Syunik region. We are pleased to note the valuable efforts of the advanced group of Russian diplomats in creating conditions for the establishment of the consulate general. Their multifaceted activities have been well received by the local population. The issue of the group's work on the establishment of the consulate general was thoroughly discussed by the heads of the Foreign Ministries of Armenia and Russia on January 21 in Moscow, and on March 20, it was also discussed by the deputy foreign ministers of both countries. We expect that by May we will be able to set a specific deadline for the opening of our consular office," Zakharova concluded
