ArmInfo. Secretary General of the Ombudsman's Office of Armenia Nina Pirumyan discussed the problems of the forcibly displaced population of Artsakh at a meeting with the Deputy Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Armenia Liv Feyen.
According to the report of the Office of the Human Rights Defender (HRD) of Armenia received by ArmInfo, the Secretary General of the Ombudsman's Office of Armenia in this regard drew attention to issues related to the protection of the rights of refugees and asylum seekers, and discussed existing problems and ongoing work, emphasizing the importance and necessity of continuous cooperation with the UNHCR.
Pirumyan also presented to Liv Feyen the scope of powers of the HRD, which includes the protection of the rights of women, children, national minorities and persons with disabilities, as well as the fight against discrimination and other areas.
In turn, the Deputy Representative of the UNHCR highly appreciated the role of the Ombudsman's institution in the implementation of the mission to protect human rights and expressed readiness to continue close cooperation with the Armenian side.
On September 19, 2023, Azerbaijan, under the pretext of an "anti-terrorist operation", committed another act of aggression against Artsakh. This was preceded by a nearly 10-month blockade of the unrecognized republic. Since the enemy aggression that began in the fall of 2020, which in September 2023 ended with the complete ethnic cleansing of Artsakh, over 150 thousand Artsakh residents have lost their homeland and become refugees.
