ArmInfo. Negotiations without mediators resulted in Armenia making unprecedented concessions to agree on the text of a peace treaty, essentially meeting almost all of Azerbaijan's demands. However, a signed document was still not received. Edmon Marukyan, the leader of the "Enlightened Armenia" party, wrote on his Facebook page.
"Our society is well aware of my stance against negotiations with Azerbaijan without mediators. Unfortunately, the Azerbaijani-Turkish version has become dominant, suggesting that mediators allegedly take sides and hinder the process. The same was stated by the Armenian political science community. As a result, the authorities have gradually moved away from the mediation of Russia, the European Union and, finally, the United States, opting instead for Erdogan's mediation and finding themselves at a disadvantage against the Turkish-Azerbaijani tandem," the politician noted.
He pointed to the example of Iran, which refuses direct negotiations with the United States and demands the services of mediators. "Negotiations without mediators resulted in Armenia making unprecedented concessions in order to agree on the text of the Peace Agreement, essentially satisfying almost all of Azerbaijan's demands, but never receiving a signed document. And the Iranian authorities are much more far-sighted and act, guided by the interests of their people. We have talked a lot about what happened, what is happening and the consequences. This reflection seeks to reassess the vulnerability of the approach to negotiations without mediators, focusing on the recent case of Iran," the leader of the Enlightened Armenia party noted.
