ArmInfo. Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly touched upon the 4-day April war of 2016, unleashed by Azerbaijan against Artsakh. It is noteworthy that even the Canadian diplomat remembers the events of those days, but the Armenian authorities do not. The day before, on the anniversary of the well-known events, not a single government body or its leader bothered to recall the Azerbaijani aggression against Artsakh, which took the lives of several dozen sons of the Armenian people who fought for their homeland and the innocent residents of Nagorno-Karabakh.
"On the anniversary of the 4-day war on April 16 in Nargono Karabakh, we remember the lives lost and reaffirm Canada's commitment to peace and dialogue. A lasting resolution can only come through diplomacy and respect for international law," Ms Joly wrote on X.
Nine years ago, on the night of April 2, 2016, the Azerbaijani Armed Forces committed a large-scale military aggression against Nagorno-Karabakh.
The war was accompanied by war crimes, gross violations of the laws and customs of war, as well as international humanitarian law.
The April military actions were considered the largest-scale since the ceasefire agreement of May 1994. During the hostilities from April 2 to 5, all Armenian military units, including artillery, tank crews and anti- tank units, demonstrated excellent performance.
During the intense fighting, units of the Artsakh Defense Army destroyed 2 Azerbaijani helicopters attacking the positions of the Armenian side, 26 tanks, as well as 14 drones, 1 BM-21 ("Grad") rocket and artillery mount, 4 infantry fighting vehicles and 1 engineering mount.
During the fighting on the contact line, the Armenian side lost 64 servicemen, 13 volunteers, 4 civilians, more than 120 people were wounded, another 9 servicemen died after the cessation of the active phase of hostilities, in the period up to April 13, several died later in hospitals.
Based on the State Department data presented on May 16 in Vienna in the same year, it becomes clear that in addition to 81 losses on the Armenian side, about 270 Azerbaijanis died. At the same time, analysts of the international research group Bellingcat estimated Baku's losses at 400-500 killed soldiers.
